Hopefully you’ve seen and enjoyed the Lego Ninjago Movie. I personally thought it was a great film so I was very excited to get the Temple of the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon, Lego set 70617.

"Temple

The Build

This was one of my favourite builds in a while. There is a lot of detail and the only problem was the darkness of the instructions that occasionally made it hard to see. The dark blue almost appeared black and that made it more difficult than normal to follow the instructions. Fortunately not impossible and I still enjoyed making it.

As you can see it’s a tall structure measuring nearly 50 cm. It’s a great addition to my Ninjago collection. Let’s take a look at why.

Stairs

""

Starting at the bottom there are some awesome looking stairs leading up to the temple. I liked the jagged look it created with the finer details.

Entrance

"Temple

Once up the stairs you’re confronted with very high and regal looking doors that swing open to reveal the inside of the temple. The scale of the doors is impressive and really captured the essence of the film.

Inside

Once inside the doors there is a trap door, the first of many traps. There is a lot of play value to this trap door and any unfortunate mini-figure who succumbs will find themselves back outside under the stairs.

"Trap
Falling down the trap door…

""
And coming out the bottom under the stairs.

Should you survive the trap door there is also a dynamite dropping trap and a dropping rock. It’s almost like the temple doesn’t want you there.

The dropping rock is wound up with the wheel and released by the lever.

"Temple

Anyone unfortunate enough to be underneath it will be knocked over or trapped underneath.

"Temple

The trap options are great for playing and really increase the value of the set. They’re easy to reset and so far haven’t stopped being played with. Finn has particularly enjoyed this part of the set.

Dungeons

"Temple

The lower part of the temple is a full length dungeon, again with a lot of play options. There are four sections with bars and various entrances. One even has a secret escape route which is also a secret entrance if you’re trying to get in and avoid those traps.

"Temple

There is even an unfortunate skeleton who didn’t find the escape route.

"Temple

Overall, the dungeons are a good feature. Especially the escape route and it’s been fun playing with this part of the set.

The Rooms

On the bottom there are two rooms. The first room has a statue surrounded by snakes. He’s wearing armour and is armed with a spear. And there’s a box of dynamite in the corner.

""

On the other side is the library, complete with scrolls and space for the mini-figures to read.

"Temple

Moving up a level there are another two rooms.

First is a weapon room complete with a katana on display. Not much space in the room but I liked the display and the skeletons head.

"Temple

Moving over there is a storage room and access to the dynamite dropping trap. There are snakes and weapons and a fairly big vase. The best part of this room is the dynamite dropping trap though.

"Temple

Above these there are two attic rooms with spider webs sticks and a lego spider. They’re pretty small so they’re more decorative than anything to play with.

The Ultimate Ultimate Weapon Chest

At the back of the temple is what they came to find. A chest with the ultimate ultimate weapon. Again it can be used as a trap if you pull it back but luckily the ninja’s have enough skill to get over and open the chest.

I felt this was a well made chest with plenty of space to put all sorts of things in. There was a lot of play value to this part of the set and most of the stories we came up had the chest as the end goal.

"Temple

The Tower

Above the door is a sturdy and pretty big roof section. As you can see there are three levels with very ornate edges. There is plenty of space for min-figures to use and a lot of play opportunities.

""

The tower is pretty high and is well designed. I really like the style of the roof and the use of the scorpions to decorate the tower. There is also a fire in the middle as you can see below.

""

The roof of the temple has lots of space for mini-figures to climb on. This was great to play with and in days to come I’m looking forward to using it for some photography.

The Guardians

The front of the temple has two temple guardians. Each guardian has moveable legs which are great for posing them. The neck moves and the mouth opens so they’re also great to play with. They weren’t in the films but in our games they served as great attack dogs for the ninja to fight off.

They big too which made them feel like a great addition to the set.

"Temple

Hanging Cage

Outside the temple there is a hanging cage which serves as a trap for any unfortunate figures who get caught. The cage is pretty sturdy and has two opening doors to give access. It’s attached to the temple so it hangs off the ground. As you can see, poor Jay got caught.

""

Mini-Figures

One of the best things about this set is the inclusion of the full complement of ninja mini-figures. That’s Kai, Cole, Lloyd, Zane, Jay and Nya. I particularly liked that they had their hair pieces instead of their usual masks. They’re a great addition to my collection.

"Team

There is also a Lord Garmadon mini-figure complete with his jungle attire. Garmadon is always a fun mini-figure but apart from the jungle cloth he is the same as the other Garmadon figures in recent sets. Not that it’s a problem, he’s just not the main attraction in this set. To be fair he does also have a different hat and in any case he’s a great character so it’s great to have him included.

""

Conclusion

Overall I’m very happy with this set. The temple itself if great value for money with tons of options for play. Finn has had a great time coming up with different stories using the available options and I don’t see that changing. The inclusion of the whole team of mini-figures is fantastic and a huge plus for this set. I’m very happy to have this in my collection.
