April favourites

April In Review

April has been fun.

I bought one of my favourite sets – in fact undoubtedly my favourite set – in a long time. The Destiny’s Bounty. I love this set. I loved building it, and I’ve loved playing with it with Finn. I’m also planning on doing more photography with it and that’s probably what I’m excited about the most.

I started the month doing the Ninjago Elemental Powers shots which hopefully you’ve read about. I learned a lot about creating backgrounds in photoshop from these shots. The original inspiration came from the posters I saw in Legoland and I think what I learned will be very useful as I want to make some other “poster” style images.

Similar to last month, I spent quite a bit of time playing and photography marvel superheroes. I really enjoyed making the Dr Strange Portal and Iron Spider. Both are from the Sanctum Sanctorum set which I still need to review. I promise I’ll do that review next month because that is another great set and you’ll notice if you follow my instagram that I clearly enjoy photographing the marvel characters. Especially this month as there has been so much hype for Avengers End Game (which was amazing by the way.)

And so we come to my favourite photos this month.

5. Jawa Battle

Lego Jawa Battle

I enjoyed the process on this one. We started to have some good weather and I’d decided to set up a scene in the garden while I worked on my tan. I played around with a lot of different set ups and angles and tried various depths of field until I settled on this one. Then into photoshop to add the effects. I’m also pretty happy because the jawa don’t have articulating legs and are therefore hard to pose. Hopefully you checked out my review of what is otherwise a fairly decent set.

4. Master Wu’s Telescope

Balcony

The detail on the destiny bounty set is amazing and this is just one small area of the ship. I like this shot because I can see Master Wu spending time surveying Ninjago City from his ship.

3. Hagrid

Lego Hagrid Hogwarts Great Hall

This was another one fun. Finn’s cousin is really into the Harry Potter sets and they both enjoyed playing with the great hall – another set I’ll try and review next month. I on the other hand enjoyed setting up a couple of shots of the professors and staff of Hogwarts. This one is my favourite. If you’d like to see more go check out my instagram for more in this set up and another shot of Harry Potter.

2. Doctor Strange

Lego Doctor Strange

Avengers End Game is here. This shot was made with a light through the window of the Sanctum and the distinctive figure of Doctor Stephen Strange in his study. Obviously the candle is a photoshop effect. I like the simplicity of this shot and how iconic the character is that you don’t even need his face in the shot.

1. Iron Spiderman

Lego Iron Spiderman

If you’ve read my behind the scenes you’ll know how I created this one. And I think it’s my favourite shot this month. Spiderman swinging into action is always a throwback to my childhood and I’m pretty happy with how this turned out. It also reinforced a lot of what I learned in photoshop this month and last.

Next Month

Next month I’m planning some more superhero shots. I’ll also be doing more with the destiny’s bounty. Hopefully we’ll get some nice weather and I’ll be able to create some outdoor setups as well.

I’m aiming to review the Sanctum Santorum and the Harry Potter great hall as previously mentioned. I’m most excited to see what I can create and I hope you’ll join me on my journey.

Thanks for reading and please let me know what you’ve been up to this month.

Finn

Hi, I'm Finn and I love lego. I love it so much I created a website to tell the stories of my life in lego.
